Woodville High School Now

This information is extracted from the Woodville High School Context Statement to provide a current perspective for Old Scholars. To see the full statement, click here.

Woodville High School opened in 1915 and celebrated its ninetieth anniversary in 2005. It has developed a proud tradition of academic performance and sporting achievements.  Students represent the State in a range of sports and cultural endeavours. The school continues to enjoy a high profile and high regard in its local community and on a statewide basis resulting in its marketing image of ‘Proud scholars in a proud community'. This is supported by strong involvement by two past scholar associations, the Woodville High School Foundation and the Woodville High School Old Scholars Association. (To contact these organisations, select the Contact Us page from the menu.) In addition many current leaders in public life are old scholars who maintain their connections with the school.

Woodville High School is a fully comprehensive school which offers continuity of secondary education for all students from Year 8 to Year 12.  The school incorporates a Special Interest Music Centre, and the Wiltja aboriginal student program. It also has a strong focus on the visual and performing arts.

The school has benefited from increased enrolments over the last three years, returning the school an enrolment of over 800, similar to that of the late 1990s.

The core values of the school are Diversity, Creativity and Success. Student success is valued and supported in a range of learning opportunities. Vocational Education and vocational pathways are being expanded so that all students experience success in a safe and caring environment which supports student resilience.

Woodville High School is a Special Interest Music School catering for students who have special abilities or interest in music. Students in the Music Centre participate in high level public performances throughout their schooling.  In alternate years, students are involved in either the Rock Eisteddfod or a school musical production.  The school regularly wins finals selection in the Rock Eisteddfod and is well regarded for the quality and extent of its public performances in dance and aerobics.

The School hosts the Wiltja Program, which is the urban secondary annexe of the schools in the central Australian area (bounded by the Northern Territory, South Australian, Western Australian borders, plus Yalata). Aboriginal (Anangu) students from these areas attend Woodville High School on short or long-term programs, and are enrolled as Woodville High School students. Besides the Aboriginal students in the Wiltja program, there are 60 Aboriginal students enrolled at the school from local Adelaide communities.

Woodville High School has very high numbers of students from 40 diverse cultural and linguistic backgrounds and this is reflected in the extensive ESL program. The most recent wave of humanitarian migration is from both different parts of Africa, the Middle East and Southern Europe.

The school welcomes full fee paying international students on study programs, international students on short term visits and exchange students.  In 2006, we have international students from Japan, and Vietnam, France on study programs. Groups of students from Uenohara High School in Japan have been involved in short-term visits over many years.

The school offers VET certificate courses in Music, Retail, Child Studies, Horticulture, Recreation and Furnishing and has high participation in programs such as Work Experience program, Australian Business Week, Special Education, Career Education, VET, Flinders University Enrichment Program,

Woodville High School offers Greek and Vietnamese languages for study.  Greek will be phased out over the next two years and the school is currently reviewing which language other than Vietnamese will be offered at the school. Other languages can be accessed through special arrangements.

The school supports students who need access to additional learning opportunities through the Open Access Program, literacy, numeracy and homework centre support.

Woodville High School has an extensive range of co-curricular activities for students. They include: Musical Productions, Come Out, Bands, Choirs, Orchestras, Debating, Mock Trials, Chess, breakdancing classes for boys, student-run lunch time music, Outdoor Education, Magazine publishing, Arts Showcase, Rock Eisteddfod, intensive supervised career program, , National Pedal Prix competition, Australian Business Education Week participation.

There are alternative programs such as as Rock and Water for boys, Youth Opportunities, Motivational Workshop for Girls, Peer Support Program, Operation Flinders, Vietnamese Australian Community Youth Project, involvement in community events with performances by our music students, Charles Sturt Council Mural Project, Come Out performances, Aerobics Challenge, the Glendi Festival, Duke of Edinburgh Award, SHIP camps and activities organised by the School Chaplain.

A major redevelopment of school facilities has resulted in new classrooms, student reception, counselling suite, canteen, administration and staff facilities.  Extensive landscaping, hard play and paved student courtyards complement the buildings.

Disabled access is available through an elevator and ramps with the majority of buildings linked by undercover verandahs.

There are plans to upgrade the Music Centre.  There could be considerable development of the school in the near future in line with the residential development of the Sheridan/ Cheltenham site opposite the school and the possibility of shared facilities with the community.

There are Specialist areas for: Music, Art, Business Studies, Computing, Dance, Drama, Languages, Health and Physical Education (including a weights room), Home Economics (including a nationally accredited VET kitchen), Music, Technology Studies (including facilities for wet photography), laboratories for Physics, Chemistry, Biology and General Science, Resource Centre, Canteen, Gymnasium and change rooms, a garden for the horticulture courses.  A dedicated area for student services houses the counsellors, EVET coordinator, Bilingual School Support Officers and the Chaplain. There is an aboriginal education centre.

For students, Woodville High School has extensive outdoor seating for students, student recreation areas, modern canteen facilities, blue phone, weights room and access to the dance studio for lunchtime rehearsals.

The school is a complex and diverse school community in which staff, students, caregivers and community agencies are encouraged to participate in the development of policies and decisions that affect them and the future of our students.
